About this series

My earlier work is an attempt to deal with the challenges contemporary society places on women — particularly what I call the “Superwoman Standard” to which television and media hold all women accountable.

While women were my chosen subject matter during this period, I feel that this work simultaneously functions as a more general commentary on the dominant isolationist/voyeuristic spirit of modern American culture. This is why I typically painted the figures alone and in their own environments to emphasize their isolation and vulnerability.
